Northern Lights

Great Falls, VA - USA

Oct 10, 2024

9pm on a Thursday - I was notified that the Northern Lights would be visible from my home town. Effective Immediately.

I was shocked! Immediately dropped what I was doing, grabbed my gear and ran to my car to find the nearest dark spot just outside of town. But not without swinging by to grab my brother first.. We ventured into Great Falls, an affluent area that contains a farm by the name of Turner Farm. Right next to the property line of the farm is an observatory - Naturally my brother and I figured it would be the best place to go. Funnily enough so did everyone else in a 50 mile radius.

Regardless, we and everyone else there were right. The dark area was perfect for watching the Aurora Borealis develop right in front of our eyes. The collective 'Ooos' and 'Ahhs' of everyone around me solidified that going out on a whim was the right decision. Truly a great surprise to witness, in northern VA no less!

These images were captured on my Fujifilm X-H2 with a 23mm 1.4 attached. The images are 2" exposures shot hand-held with not much more than a chain link fence to rest on. The true hero of this story is the In-Body Image Stabilization in the system, making me a better photographer than I aught to be. Enjoy!
